Seminar on the Monograph Series: “Asian Imaginaries and the Reality of Encounters”

  • Date: February 23rd, Monday, 2026, 14:30 – 17:00
  • Location: Room 304, SNUAC (Bldg. 101)

The Phase 2 monograph series, “Asian Imaginaries and the Reality of Encounters,” was conceived to explore how the concept of “Asia,” as we have come to think it, was formed within specific historical contexts, and how it continues to collide with and be reconfigured by contemporary political, social, and cultural realities. “Asia” has been more than a mere geographical category; it has functioned as a discursive space shaped through the experiences of empire, the Cold War, and globalization. Yet such imaginaries have been continually revised and challenged amid shifting power relations and interregional tensions in lived reality. This seminar seeks to illuminate these sites of tension and intersection through an interdisciplinary lens, critically reflecting on the gap between “imagined Asia” and “experienced Asia.” In doing so, it aims to move beyond a singular image of Asia and instead explore a multilayered Asia that is formed through processes of conflict, negotiation, and encounter.
