- Date: February 4th, Wednesday, 2026, 14:00 – 17:30
- Location: Youngone Hall (Room 210), SNUAC (Bldg. 101)
The book A History of Korean Popular Culture (2021) by popular culture critic and professor Chang-nam Kim has been translated into English and published through the popular culture book translation project of the SNUAC Center for Hallyu Studies. A History of Korean Popular Culture is a major work that analyzes Korean popular culture by integrating historical facts with cultural symbolism. Within the flow of modern Korean history, the book offers a multifaceted analysis of representative cultural texts and creators, structures of production and consumption, industries and markets, institutions and politics, as well as issues of power and resistance. It further encompasses technology, media, generational conflict, and the emotions of everyday life, illuminating broader social transformations and lived experiences in Korea. Centered around a lecture by the author, the event will examine key debates and theoretical implications in the study of Korean popular culture, and discuss how the critical questions posed by A History of Korean Popular Culture may be expanded and reinterpreted within today’s Korean pop music environment.
