Recruiting for SNUAC Friends of Asia(FoA) Student Club: The 3rd Cohort

Purpose
 SNU Asia Center (SNUAC) is a research institution for the dissemination of academic work on Asia, providing a basis for the interchange of cultures, and supporting exchange programs. SNUAC  supports research activities and exchanges between Asia and diverse nations. SNUAC contributes to accumulation of outstanding research achievements, as well as convening diverse invited lectures, workshops, and conferences domestic and abroad. To further facilitate SNUAC’s role in Asian studies, the center created the student club “Friends of Asia(FA)” at SNU last year. The members will be invited to SNUAC academic events and will have access to opportunities for training and analyzing preliminary data relating to Asian studies.

Qualifications
Enrolled students at SNU (including undergraduate, graduate, and students on leave of absence) with Asian backgrounds.
Students with non-Asian backgrounds may also apply.

Period of Membership
1. Membership begins from September 2018.
2. Members need to fulfill club activities for at least a semester as a general rule. Members who wish to participate longer may participate for additional periods.
3. Monthly seminars (Tuesday, 19:00-20:00, dinner is provided)

Details on Friends of Asia Activities
1. Research on Asia Regional Information (Issue Paper)
– Conduct preliminary data research for SNUAC journal on the Asian region (politics, economy, society, culture, environment, Asia cities)
– Contribute an issue paper on a theme or country trimonthly (selected outstanding issue paper will be published in SNUAC’s Newsletter)
– Contribution fee is provided.

2. Seminars
– General Seminar: Monthly general seminar (Tuesday, 19:00-20:00; dinner is provided)
=> interim report on issue paper and theme/country of the team (Presentation: max. 10 min. per team with 5 min. Q&A session)
– Group Seminar: Bimonthly group seminar, small support is provided, must submit seminar reports
(the specifics of the seminar operation may be decided with team members)

3. Cultural Exploration & Exchange
– Must complete two exploration activities per semester (one exploration activity is planned for mid-September)
– The specifics of cultural activities depend on the semester’s chosen theme/country and may be adjusted based on consultation between the members

4. Participation in ‘Introduction to Asian Studies’ (optional)
– Will be held on Fridays 14:00-15:30 (total of 12 sessions)

Regulations for Incentives
1. Only members who participate in at least 80% of club activities will be given the opportunities to participate in academic events held by SNUAC
2. Advantage will be given to members who participate in SNUAC-hosted programs
3. Certificate of completion and opportunity to be published in the Newsletter will be only given to members who have fulfilled the regulations for incentives (need to attend at least five of the eight seminars + participate in at least one cultural excursion + submit Issue Paper, simultaneously)
