On November 29th, a ‘Reading Urban Theory Critically’ seminar by Dr. Eunyoung Choi (Institute of Globalization and Multicultural Studies, Hanyang University) was held as the last event of the second season of the seminar, under the topic “International Cities of North Korea: Pyongyang and Hyesan”.

Dr. Choi explained the case of the official international city, Pyongyang, and the differences in the industrial structure, form of family and daily life in Hyesan, an ‘unofficial international city’ by the ways of illegal transactions such as smuggling. She also argued that there are limitations in the approaches and methodologies on North Korean cities since they are oriented around interviews of North Korean defectors and that there must be a new form of methodology put into use.
