North Koreans have long been defined as “the people” (inmin), expected to conform unconditionally to the state’s dominant ideology and system of governance. In recent years, however, signs of a qualitative transformation have emerged within North Korean society, as individuals seek to break away from this overarching paradigm of rule and develop an autonomous consciousness of resistance, thereby becoming minjung. Minjung refers to people who are qualitatively distinct from the kind of human subjects demanded by the Supreme Leader system and from the inmin expected to conform to the state. The Northeast Asia Center at SNUAC seeks to provide an opportunity for an in-depth examination of the bottom-up dynamics generated by North Korea’s minjung.
