The Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) maintained uninterrupted peaceful relations with the Ming Empire (1368–1644) for approximately two centuries. This Joseon–Ming relationship has generally been understood as a product of the Ming-centered Sinocentric order and the tributary system. Such an understanding, however, does not sufficiently account for the agency exercised by the Joseon court and its envoys in shaping the character and legitimacy of this relationship, nor does it adequately explain their motivations and strategies. Focusing on Joseon diplomatic poetry and diplomatic documents, this lecture analyzes diplomatic rhetorical strategies and examines how the Joseon court, through its interactions with Ming emperors and envoys, jointly constructed key elements of Ming imperial ideology.
