Hallyu Revisited by Asia: The Cultural Politics of Affinity, Antipathy, and Conflict

  • Date: April 17th, Friday, 2026, 14:00 – 17:50
  • Location: Youngone Hall (Room 210), SNUAC (Bldg. 101)

This seminar was organized in response to the recent “SEAblings vs. Knetz” controversy that has circulated in online spaces across Southeast Asia. It seeks to critically examine the racism and hate speech that have surfaced within K-pop fandom communities, as well as the ways in which these dynamics have expanded into broader anti-Korean sentiment in the region. In particular, the seminar focuses on issues of discriminatory representation and exclusion experienced by Korean Wave audiences in Malaysia and Indonesia. It aims to analyze how power relations and cultural hierarchies within global fandoms are formed and reproduced.
