The Russia–Ukraine war has simultaneously shaken the structure of the twenty-first-century international order and global patterns of human mobility. The large-scale displacement triggered by the conflict vividly illustrates the reality of forced migration produced by contemporary wars. Refugee movements rarely follow a single trajectory; rather, they involve complex patterns that combine temporary stays, return migration, onward movement to third countries, and resettlement. The Ukraine War and Refugees Crossing Borders examines these dynamics within the broader political, economic, and social contexts of Eurasia.
The book approaches refugees as subjects formed through processes of cross-border mobility. Their choices and migration routes are shaped not only by individual agency but also by national policies and institutions, as well as by the political and economic environments of host societies. The contributors conceptualize refugee mobility as a continuous process linking countries of origin, transit states, host countries, and destinations of secondary migration. By analyzing the structural factors operating at each stage of movement and settlement, the volume demonstrates how refugees’ lives are shaped by differences in legal status, protection regimes, and social conditions.
