This lecture series is designed to offer a concrete view of ancient Chinese state formation through the latest research of Professor You Yi Fei (National Chung Hsing University), who has reexamined the administrative institutions and documentary systems of the Warring States, Qin, and Han periods based on excavated materials. The lectures will be held twice, on December 2 and 3. The first lecture is titled “The Invention of ‘Local Government’: Historical Materials, Concepts and Structure”, and the second is titled “From Legal Edicts to Administrative Documents: The Posthumous Identity Cards of Qin-Han Scribes”. By presenting these recent scholarly findings grounded in excavated sources, the series aims to expand understanding of administrative history during the Warring States and Qin–Han periods and to provide a more multidimensional perspective on the operational structures of early East Asian states.
