[News] SNUAC CECAS Signs MOU with Wolgok Koryoin Cultural Museum “Gyeol” for Collaborative Research

On October 19, 2025, the Center for Eurasian and Central Asian Studies of the SNUAC and the Wolgok Koryoin Cultural Museum Gyeol (hereafter “the Museum”) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for research collaboration. The agreement aims to foster mutual cooperation in promoting understanding of the history and culture of Koryoin (ethnic Koreans in the former Soviet Union) migration and in carrying out related research and cultural projects.

Located in Wolgok-dong, Gwangju Metropolitan City, the Wolgok Koryoin Cultural Museum Gyeol is a museum dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of materials related to the history and culture of Koryoin communities. The museum houses approximately 12,000 artifacts, 23 of which have been designated as national records. Since its opening in May 2021, the museum has operated permanent, special, and thematic exhibition halls, as well as a gallery dedicated to nationally designated records. The thematic hall regularly hosts commemorative exhibitions on Koryoin history, while the special exhibition hall features annual displays highlighting prominent Koryoin figures. The records gallery exhibits manuscripts and photographs from 23 volumes of Koryoin mother-tongue cultural and artistic archives registered as national records.

Through this partnership, the two institutions will collaborate to strengthen researcher and archival exchanges, expand networking opportunities, and share diverse knowledge and information related to Koryoin communities across Eurasia. Their joint efforts will contribute to deepening academic and educational understanding of the Koryoin diaspora.
