This seminar reports on the outcomes of a field study conducted in Japan’s Tohoku region from July 9 to 13. Through the on-site investigation, participants directly examined the practices of exchange among ancient Asian states and the adoption of institutions, while also experiencing the multilayered and interactive nature of Asia’s intellectual heritage within its regional context. In particular, the seminar will present findings on mokkan (wooden tablets) and lacquered documents excavated in the region.
