The Asia-Africa Center at SNUAC has been hosting the SNU Africa Seminar series on a monthly basis since 2022. This seminar series aims to foster a deeper understanding of Africa and promote academic exchange by inviting experts from diverse academic fields and professional backgrounds.
The 22nd SNU Africa Seminar, scheduled for Monday, March 10th, 2025, will feature Dr. Jinho Chung, a Senior Research Fellow at the Transport Studies Unit (TSU) at the University of Oxford. Dr. Chung will deliver a lecture and lead a discussion on the topic “Climate Mobilities into Cities: A Case of Ethiopia.” In this seminar, he will introduce the experiences of Ethiopian tenant farmers migrating from rural to urban areas through the complex framework of climate mobility. By exploring this topic, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of not only the real-life experiences of Ethiopian tenant farmers facing climate change but also the economic motivations behind their migration, regional power structures, and social inequalities. Furthermore, the discussion will encourage a more cautious and multidimensional approach to understanding the relationship between climate change and migration.
Dr. Jinho Chung is a Senior Research Fellow at the Transport Studies Unit (TSU) within the School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) at the University of Oxford. He obtained his PhD in Human Geography from University College London (UCL) with a focus on climate change adaptation research. Currently, he is leading the “Climate Mobility, Enduring Uncertainty, and Urban Environments (CEMENT)” project, supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Additionally, he is involved in research for the “Equitable Development and Migration (EDM)” initiative at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR).
