How do migrants transform and pioneer their communities and destinies according to industrial changes? How do farmers cope with massive and accelerated urbanization? This cultural ethnography focuses on the transformation of a rural community of farmers from Wenzhou into the largest low-cost clothing production and sales hub in Beijing during the 1990s. The book, Communities Across Boundaries: The Life History of Zhejiang Village in Beijing by Professor Biao Xiang, Director of the Department of Anthropology of Economic Experimentation at Max Planck Institute for Ethnological Research, explores the dynamic relationships between the state and society, central and local governments, urban and rural areas, and governance and resistance in China after the reform and opening-up period. This event features a direct presentation by the author and discussions with domestic scholars. Highlighting the importance of “the structure of everyday life,” as described by Braudel, this work illustrates how daily life significantly influences historical changes and is expected to provide new insights for the academic community in the country.
