On December 18th, we invite Juyeong Jang (Associate Research Fellow, IOM MRTC) for a colloquium on “South Korean Attitudes Toward Refugees: The Difference between Discourse and Empirical Analysis.”Dr. Jang has served as a consultant for Seoul Metropolitan City’s Foreign Residents Council and the IDB’s Migration Initiative and continues research in migration and refugees.

Korean society has been actively discussing about refugees, such as the Yemeni refugees and Afghan special contributors. The awareness and attitudes of residents towards refugees are considered crucial elements for the refugees’ successful settling and integration into society. Depending on the ratio or compositional characteristics of migrants in each region, the acceptance of residents appears differently. This colloquium will share the analysis of factors related to Koreans’ attitudes toward accepting refugees and seek the limitations and alternatives of Korean refugee policy to discuss the way for Korean society to go for future refugee issues.
