This book theorizes the historical emotional structure of East Asia’s formation of modernity from an East Asian and Korean point of view as the concept ‘Yellow Pacific’, and invites new dialogues to take place. By theorizing the experience of East Asian modernity in the ‘Yellow Pacific’, the author emphasizes existential, material, and sentimental historicity from a ‘here and now’ point of view. In a social evolutionary perspective, ‘Yellow’ refers to East Asians who are in an active self-approval, beyond any degradation or discrimination. ‘Pacific’ signifies that the USA is the major Other of this region in the process of East Asia’s modernization, Cold War and post-Cold War, globalization, and neo-liberalization. Thus ‘Yellow Pacific’ refers to East Asia’s modernity and the formation of modern subjectivity in the historically lived field and relationships rather than physical movements, in the double binding relationship with the USA as the external Other and the Others within the region.
