Though the Southeast Asian region seems to be peaceful on the outside, the strategic environment around the region has not been peaceful to its countries. From the colonial era to today’s US-China race, Southeast Asian countries have been endlessly exposed to interventions and oppressions from big powers. All the more so, Southeast Asian countries sought their survival, maximized their profit, and secured autonomy through carefully executed strategies. This lecture examines Southeast Asia’s external environment amidst US-China competition and reflects on the strategies for strong powers that Southeast Asian countries have developed so far.
