1. About SNUAC
Since its inauguration in 2009, SNUAC aims to serve as a global hub for research in Asian studies by integrating regional and thematic research. By creating and sharing forward-thinking ideas, SNUAC contributes to the mutually harmonious development of Asia. The regional centers (Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Eurasian and Central Asia, South Asia, West Asia) and thematic programs will facilitate SNUAC’s vision for becoming a global hub for Asian studies research.
2. Fellowships and Grants at SNUAC
This project focuses on research, international exchange and talent development for a new Asian era. SNUAC’s 2020 research projects include establishing the basis of Asia studies, supporting publications on Asia studies, planning research (through contest/invitation), dissertation writing fellowship, and dissertation award.
II. About SNUAC Dissertation Writing Fellowship
1. Purpose
The SNUAC Dissertation Writing Fellowship seeks to foster the next academic generation and rising scholars in humanities and social sciences related to Asia, and enhance the research capacities of Korean scholars in Asia studies.
2. Basic Policy
(1) The fellowship mainly supppors research in humanities and social sciences related to Asia.
(2) Topics will be selected through the assessment process of SNUAC Research Council.
3. Grant
(1) The fellowship supports doctoral students in Korea who have completed their coursework and are currently preparing to write their dissertations.
(2) The grant will be KRW 12,000,000 maximum (three persons maximum) for one year
4. Duration of Fellowship
Maximum 1 year from selection (fellowship will be suspended if the recipient graduates within the period)
5. Research Topics
(1) Topics in humanities and social sciences related to Asia
(2) Integrated research combining Asian region and theme in humanities and social sciences
* Dissertations only examining Korea will not be supported.
6. Eligibility
(1) Eligible Applicants
– Ph.D. candidates in Korean universities (excluding those studying abroad; including international students studying in Korea)
– Ph.D. candidates in their final stages of completing their dissertations
(2) Exceptions
– Graduate students currently being funded for similar purposes by another institution
– Graduate students with contracts for service in other institutions including research projects (yet, lecturers are excluded from this rule of exception)
7. Application Requirements
(1) Documents
– Proposal for Ph.D. dissertation
– Recommendation and plan of guidance from dissertation adviser
– Application form, research records
(2) Application form
– A4 15 pages maximum, font: HCR Batang 10 point, line spacing 160%
8. Screening and Selection Process
(1) Topics will be selected through the assessment process of SNUAC Research Council.
(2) Selection Process
– Stage 1: Assessment on the proposal, recommendation and plan for advising the dissertation
– Stage 2: Final selection within the budget through evaluation of SNUAC Research Council
9. Timeline
(1) Call for application: January 17th – February 16th, 2022
(2) Application deadline: February 16th, 2022, submission arrival by 18:00
(3) Evaluation process (stages 1-2): February 18th – March 19th, 2022
(4) Selection notice and research contract conclusion: March 21st – 31st, 2022

10. Submission & Use of Dissertations
(1) Submission deadline: Within 6 months after the end of fellowship period
(2) Submission details: Two copies of Ph.D. dissertations to be submitted to SNUAC
(3) It must be stated in the Ph.D. dissertation that it was completed with funding from “2022 SNUAC Dissertation Writing Fellowship”
(4) It is mandatory for the recipient to present at a SNUAC Brown Bag Seminar after completing the dissertation
(5) It is mandatory for the recipient to submit an issue paper to DiverseAsia published by SNUAC
