The Role of Joseon Research Institutions and the Meaning of “Jiphyeon (集賢)” – In Celebration of the 600th Anniversary of the Founding of Jiphyeonjeon

The year 2020 marks the 600th year since the founding of Jiphyeonjeon, which played a key role in the process of the Joseon dynasty’s preparation of various products of civilization it needed for stable government. In commemoration of 600 years of Jiphyeonjeon, the Institute of Humanities at Seoul National University is holding an international academic conference on ‘The Role of Joseon Research Institutions and the Meaning of “Jiphyeon (集賢)”.’ This conference will not only stop at simply introducing the achievements of King Sejong’s regime in completing the national system, creating products of civilization, fixing institutions, and understanding and internalizing the Confucian ideas for governing the state through Jiphyeonjeon, but will examine the nature and meaning of Joseon dynasty’s research institutions including Jiphyeonjeon and Kyujanggak in the later generations, through the keyword “Jiphyeon”. Thus the conference will discuss how the Joseon dynasty realized the so-called “Jiphyeon” and what kind of meanings the function and role of “Jiphyeon” had in society. Based on these discussions, the conference will also examine the significance of academic perspective and methodologies achieved through the academic activities of Jiphyeonjeon and Kyujanggak and specific outcomes based on those achievements in contemporary East Asia or even in the context of world history beyond the region.
