<Rivercide: The Secret Six> is a documentary film that closely covers the Lee Myung-bak government’s ‘Four Major Rivers Restoration Project’. The film was first released at the 20th Jeonju International Film Festival in 2019. It was produced by OhmyNews, which gathered materials on the project for 12 years, and directed by Byeongki Kim, the former editor-in-chief.

In order to enhance the sustainability of future Earth, efforts should be given in cooperative projects with the press or civil society beyond academia, along with activities at the local or state levels. Future Earth Program has opened up various attempts to create cooperative opportunities with civil societies in Gwanak-gu, where SNU is located, and the nearby Dongjak-gu.

As the program sought cooperation with civil society within Gwanak-gu, a preliminary agreement for joint projects in 2020 was made with civil society activists in Gwanakwith and Gwanak Energy Action through several meetings. As the first project of 2020, a screening of the environmental documentary film <Rivercide: The Secret Six> was planned as a public activity inviting members of SNU community and residents of Gwanak-gu on January 29th.

The documentary film <Rivercide: The Secret Six> depicts the social conflicts caused by the civil engineering works in which former president Myung-bak Lee invested 22 trillion won of the state budget. The film was directed by reporter Byeongki Kim, the former editor-in-chief of OhmyNews, an online news platform, and features many environmental activists Jongsool Kim, Chuljae Lee, Hyungchul Yeom and others who call themselves the ‘independence fighters for the 4 major river project’.

The screening was attended by about 110 audience members, 99 of which signed up prior to the event. After watching the film, there was a GV with director Byeongki Kim and reporter Jongsool Kim, with Future Earth Program’s research fellow Eunhui Eom as the moderator. Director Kim suggested all to watch the reality of “over a trillion won still being used as taxes every year, as the 4 major river project is still not over.”
