2019 International Symposium on Child Well-being in Korea

Save the Children, SNU Institute of Social Welfare and SNU Asia Center are jointly holding ‘2019 International Symposium on Child Well-being in Korea’ to commemorate 30 years of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and also to share the research achievements in the fourth year of internationally comparing the quality of children’s lives. In this symposium, we will present the results of research on the quality of Korean children’s lives, and compare them to the quality of children’s lives in Spain, Bangladesh, Israel, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Furthermore, it will be a place of discussion for not only members of the academia but also the field workers and researchers at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the city office of Seoul, and other government-affiliated research institutes to seek the direction for enhancing the quality of children’s lives in Korea.



On November 11th and 12th, the International Symposium on Child Well-being in Korea was held over the two days. This international symposium was jointly organized by Save the Children, SNU Institute of Social Welfare and SNU Asia Center to commemorate 30 years of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, with the topic of “The Quality of Life for Diverse Children: Approaches from cultural, national and family contexts”.
On the first day of the symposium held at Ferrum Tower, the event was opened by the keynote speech of Professor Bong-Joo Lee (SNU Dept. of Social Welfare) on “Subjective Happiness of Korean Children in an Internationally Comparative Context”. It was followed by Min Sang Yoo (Associate Researcher, National Youth Policy Institute)’s presentation on “The Quality of Life for Korean Children, Is It Changing?”. In the afternoon, under the theme of “The Quality of Life for Our Children Seen Through International Comparison”, Professor Sun Suk Kim (Korea National University of Transportation, Dept. of Social Welfare), Professor Ferran Casas, Professor Yu-Wen Chen, and Professor Daphna Gross-Manos gave presentations on the quality of children’s life by form of child protection outside homes in Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and Israel, respectively.
In the symposium on the 12th, which was proceeded at Samick Hall, SNUAC,  Professor Jaejin Ahn (Gachon University, Dept. of Social Welfare), Professor Ihsana Sabriani Borualogo, Professor Yu-Wen Chen, Professor Daphna Gross-Manos, and Professor Haridhan Goswami introduced the quality of children’s life in Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Israel, and Bangladesh under the topic “Comparison of Children’s Well-being among Asian Countries”.
