Youngone Corporation’s Strategy of Expansion in Bangladesh: Focusing on Overcoming Institutional Gap

Speaker: Myung-Moo Lee (Sungkyunkwan University)

Youngone Corporation has established OEM clothing manufacturing factory in Bangladesh in the early 1980s, the early stage of Korea’s overseas investment, and continues to successfully operate it. The business environment of Youngone Corporation is going beyond BoP (Base of the economic pyramid) level 1.0 which considers the low-income markets of rising countries as the consumption markets, and evolving into BoP 2.0 which considers the low-income class as business partners, contributing to the enhancement of their quality of life and increase of their income. This research surveys various institutional voids that Youngone Corporation had faced when launching into the local market, and examines the process of overcoming those institutional voids through a three-part (economy/environment/society) business model canvas research. Moreover, the research suggests sustainable means of symbiotic development for Youngone Corporation in the local market, based on the concept of BoP 2.0. Based on the results of this research, future research will analyze the means of overcoming institutional voids and sustainable development for Korean conglomerates in India, the leading country in South Asia.
