Linguistic adaptation and identity (re)construction among North Korean refugees in South Korea

Speaker: Mi Yung Park (University of Auckland)

On November 12th, a brown bag seminar was held in Room 406 of SNUAC with Prof. Mi Yung Park of the University of Auckland. She talked about her current ongoing research on the linguistic adaptation and identity (re)construction among North Korean refugees in South Korea through the specific and vivid cases of North Korean college students in South Korea. She explained about the tensions that North Korean refugees undergo due to linguistic differences, the various adaptational aspects they show in their process of social adaptation, and their process of reconstructing and negotiating their own identities as precious assets of a unified Korea with their unique strengths.

After the lecture, a discussion session was held from diverse perspectives such as the characteristics of data, analytical frame, the paradox between the actualities and recognitions in interviews and others such as economic conditions.
