An Exploratory Study on the Fear of Crime of Foreigners Living in Korea: Focusing on Asians

Speaker: Soo-Hyeong Choi (Korean Institute of Criminology)

On October 29th, there was a brown bag seminar on ‘An Exploratory Study on the Fear of Crime of Foreigners Living in Korea: Focusing on Asians’.

The presentation was given by Soo-Hyeong Choi, a researcher at Korean Institute of Criminology who has newly joined SNUAC in 2019 as a visiting scholar. Dr. Choi earned her Ph.D. in sociology at Korea University in 2008 and has been conducting research at KIC for 10 years. KIC is the only national crime and criminal justice research institute in Korea, presently operating under the Office of the Prime Minister. She conducted National Victimization Survey that examines the realities of victimization in Korea and the citizens’ awareness related to crimes, playing a great role in creating the basic data for establishing policies for protecting crime victims and preventive measures for crimes.

Dr. Choi categorized the presentation into three parts to look into detail. First, the level of ‘fear of crime’ of Asian foreigners living in Korea; second, a comparison of the level of ‘fear of crime’ of East Asians and that of South East Asians living in Korea; third, the influential factors of fear of crime in Asian foreigners. She explained in detail the approach, research method and research objective to the audience.

Dr. Choi explained the situation of the foreign population in Korea as our society accelerates in its process of becoming more multicultural and multiracial, the differences in influential factors by each form of fear of crime, and the significance and limitations of the research. She also noted that there should be a higher interest in the area and construction of informational database.
