On September 30, a colloquium was held by SNUAC Northeast Asia Center to discuss the political situation of the Korean peninsula and the sanctions North Korea.
For the colloquium, four participants from UN (Yvonne Yew, Phillip Schell, Jong Kwon Youn) including Ambassador Alastair Morgan, Coordinator of the UN Panel of Experts on DPRK sanctions, visited SNUAC. Mr. Alastair Morgan provided his opinions on the current situation of North Korea and the effectiveness of UN sanctions based on his experience of working as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Pyongyang from 2015 to 2018, and shared his insights on the UN panel’s recently published report.
In this colloquium, the panel was joined by Dong-Joon Jo (SNU), Sang Hyun Lee (Sejong Institute), Kyung Hoon Leem (SNU), Dong-ik Shin (former Ambassador to Austria), Dal-ho Chung (former Ambassador to Egypt) and Heonik Kwon (Univ. of Cambridge, Trinity College). The event enabled an in-depth discussion of how to view the situation on the Korean peninsula, and furthermore reminded us of the importance of consistent exchange among scholars who conduct researches related to the topic.
