Landscape Sustainability in Transnational Area of Tumen River

Speaker: Nan Ying (Professor, Yanbian University)

During lunch hour on October 1st, the first brown bag seminar of the second half of 2019 was held at Asia Square, SNUAC. Professor Nan Ying (Yanbian University’s School of Geographic and Oceanographic Sciences), who is currently a visiting scholar at SNUAC, analyzed the utilization of land, changes in land coverage and their driving powers from 1977 to 2016 with various data and resources in transnational area of Tumen river, and evaluated the influence of four types of temporal-spatial distribution patterns of ecosystem service and changes in land usage on the ecosystem service.

The transnational area of Tumen river is where borders of China, Russia, and DPRK meet, and as the route to China and each country of Northeast Asia, as well as an important ecological region of China, it is an interesting area where we can find clues of DPRK’s land usage and changes in ecological environment. Professor Nan’s research was significant in the aspect that it used and simulated multidimensional data analysis results including 40 years to examine the optimal measure of land usage that can guarantee sustainability after 40 years. After the 40-minute presentation, scholars from diverse fields such as sociology, economics, archeology, and political science shared their opinions on the historical meaning and current dynamics of the Tumen river area as a transnational region.
