On August 17th, a joint conference of SNU and Yanbian University was held at Yanbian University in China. This conference was planned in order to seek cooperative measures between the two universities in preparation for an era of peace on the Korean peninsula. As this year marked the 70th anniversary of Yanbian University, it especially sought to find ways for SNU to contribute to Yanbian University’s growth, through the Hunchun Campus that is now newly being built.
On the Korean side, the event was co-hosted by the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies and SNU Asia Center, and a total of 15 professors and researchers participated. On the part of Yanbian University, the university headquarters planned this event. President Woong Kim of Yanbian University participated to suggest a regular and official exchange between the two universities.
Academic presentations included not only those in humanities and social science but also various research achievements in engineering and medicine, and the participants sought to materialize ways for both universities to jointly cooperate in the future based on those research results. Some of the points with shared understanding are as follows: urgency for cooperating to improve the quality of faculty and researchers in Yanbian University; concrete and actual cooperation is needed in the field of environment and public health in order to heighten the sustainability of Northeast Asia. Yet, it was also pointed out that multilateral cooperation among universities not only in China and Korea but also in nearby countries such as Russia and Japan must come first since there are many uncertainties in cooperation and joint projects only between the two universities considering today’s rapidly changing international politics.
