2019 The Commons Forum: Four Colors of the Commons that Speculative Seoul Has

  • Date: May 31, 2019 Friday 14:00-18:30
  • Location: Kyungui Line Commons (Gongduk Station Exit 1)

Seoul is the original place for speculative urbanization in South Korea. The sharing experiment that is currently tried here in Kyungui Line was regulated as ‘illegal occupation’ by Korea Network Railroad Authority and Mapogu office several days ago. Only ownership can fill up the space of Seoul, vitality of a city, generated as urban dwellers mutually plan different usages and events, including a temporary place to stay for relocated residents, a playground, a kitchen garden, and space for learning, are on the verge of evaporation under the name of law. Can’t illegal occupation be seen not as social stigma, but a welcomed sign that it seeks to raise sharing principle in the urban space where principles of private ownership and capital operate. In this session, four researchers from Center for Asian Urban Societies seek to actively understand this sign. The presenters attempt to show four colors of the Commons in Seoul, from extreme struggle for space to a (relatively) conservative attempt to plant communization of an apartment that is a space for speculative urbanization. There are of course no right answers. We seek to find the answers that can be put into use through a debate among the presenters, the debators, and the audience at the frontline where speculative urbanization and the principle of communization collide.
