Facing Another Central Axis of World Economy, the ASEAN Economy

  • Date: May 2nd~May 23, 2019 (Every Thursday)
  • Location: SNU Asia Center Youngwon Hall (Room 210)

The size of the economy of the ASEAN which consists of 10 Southeast Asia countries is 2.761 trillion dollars, which is 3.45% of the World GDP (2017). The ASEAN is one of the few countries that has kept 5% of growth rate over the past previous 10 years since 2002. South Korea and the ASEAN has kept extending trade since establishing diplomatic relations in 1989 and has become the second biggest trading partner of South Korea. South Korea is the fifth largest trading partner of the AEAN, thus becoming a significant economic partner for each other. Understandings on the ASEAN as a whole as well as on each member country need to be improved because the level of income and industrial structure of the ASEAN nations are drastically different (One of the richest countries and one of the poorest countries are both part of the ASEAN.) Therefore, SNU Southeast Asia Center has prepared an open seminar to get to know more about the ASEAN economy, especially on the case of Vietnam, which is a country trade the most with South Korea in ASEAN countries.
