2019 SNU Asia Center Book Talk Series <1>: Reconstruction of the East Asian Developmental State Model


This book attempts to reconstruct the East Asian developmental state model that faced criticisms a after the economic crisis in 1997 in accordance with the changes of external environment. The author discusses the role of a state for development in times, when international conflicts and instabilities such as competitions in high technology sector, trade wars, exchange rate wars, financial crisis are increasing, and discuss the limits of current East Asian developmental state model and what need to be complemented in response to new environments. Also, it also suggests essential factors for successful development of developing countries, such as autonomy of a country, a well-organized bureaucracy, cooperation between a state and business sector and capturing challenges from external environment and opportunities, by emphasizing that East Asian developmental model can be adopted as a developmental model of developing countries.
