Review
On December 17, 2018, following the first 2018 SNUAC Research Project Seminar in November, a presentation on the “Study on the Asian Identity, Exchange and Integration: Search for the Development of East Asian Integration Index” by the research team led by Professor Soyoung Kim (Dept. of Economics) was held at SNUAC. This research has sought to develop an index indicating the level of integration in Asia. Three South Asian countries’ (Korea, China, and Japan) level of integration focusing on ‘economic,’ ‘socio-cultural,’ and ‘environmental’ factors were examined which also allowed the scrutinization of the unique identity of Asia. Discussions on interim results demonstrating relatively higher integration level in economic and environmental factors and relatively lower integration level in socio-cultural’ factor followed. The importance of the current study amongst the current efforts toward integration in Asia as exemplified by ASEAN and ASEAN+3 as well as the limitations in the current literature on integration index in Asia was emphasized. The seminar ended with discussions on the team’s future plans including reconsiderations of the integration index composition method, addition of the political factor, and expansion of research subject to include the general Asian region.
