Review
On December 12, 2018, Emeritus Professor Hyun-Chin Lim (Department of Sociology) was invited for the ‘2018 Book Talk’ sponsored by SNUAC for a talk on his co-authored book Mobile Asia which was published in the SNUAC Book Series in Asian Studies. This event was chaired by Dr. Suk-Ki Kong (senior researcher, SNUAC) and the discussant was Professor Moon-Gi Suh from the Department of Information Sociology at Soongsil University.
Emeritus Professor Hyun-Chin Lim began the talk by addressing his aspiration for the book to serve as a basis for future scholars studying sociology on the development and introduced development theory. The book’s examination on the capitalisms in Asia, Asia’s central role in the global mobile telecom industry and the resulting transformation and integration of national economies, and the establishment of the mobile industry in global value chains was explained. Emeritus Professor Hyun-Chin Lim then emphasized the importance of comparative research examining various East Asian nations including Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan and discussed on the similarities and differences between these nations regarding the integration of global and regional value chains. Professor Moon-Gi Suh addressed the issues that would expand on the book’s discourse such as the role of ICT in Asian capitalisms, a possibility for the development of a new index on ICT in East Asia, and the implications for the future mobile telecom industry in Korea at the end of this book talk.
