On November 16-17, 2018, the annual seminar co-organized by SNUAC and UNITAR was held on the topic of ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Future Earth’ at the International Peace Center in Jeju. SNUAC Director SooJin Park commenced the workshop with his opening speech stating the seminar’s “goals for providing the basis of effective and feasible policies for Future Earth through cooperation between the natural and social sciences,” and JITC Director Young-sam Ma’s welcoming remarks followed stating that this event “hopes to contribute to decision making via collaboration between scientists and society.”
This seminar attracted experts from diverse fields including agriculture, medicine, and sociology and sustainability of future earth was discussed. The Global Hub Director Fumiko Kasuga at Future Earth emphasized SNUAC’s important future role in fostering and collaborating with Future Earth based on its regional expertise through her keynote speech. Approximately 30 experts from diverse fields and institutions participated and collectively sought for feasible sustainability measures in this seminar. In attendance was Emeritus Professor Chungsi Ahn (SNU), Chair Soon-Chang Yoon (Future Earth Korea), and Director Kyunghee Kang (Institute for Social Science Research, JNU). Prospective plans for Future Earth and specifically, the cooperative measures for peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula, as well as long-term goals for interdisciplinary research were discussed at this seminar.
