Abstract
The resumption of exchanges between the North and South has promisingly paved a way for research. Honorary Professor Chin-Sung Chung’s research team on ‘Korean Schools in Japan’ composed of Korean and Japanese historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and educationalists have attempted to examine the history and curriculum of Korean schools in Japan; and the symposium is organized with the aim to raise awareness and activate interest within the academia. It is anticipated that this symposium will expand the basis of research on Joseon Schools from a holistic peace perspective of East Asia and the new cold war system that overcomes the history of Korean residents in Japan and the South-North relations.
Review
The international symposium, co-organized by SNUAC Northeast Asia Center, SNU Institute for Peace and Unification Studies, and Overseas Koreans Studies Institute, on ‘Joseon School’s Ethnic Education for Korean Residents in Japan’ was held on the 29th of October. This symposium explored basic research on Joseon Schools and tried to raise awareness and activate interest within the academia. This event fundamentally looked back on the concept of ‘Korean residents in Japan’ and scholars from diverse fields conducting research on Joseon Schools from Korea and Japan gathered together for this event. The symposium began with a thorough exploration of ethnic education advanced by Joseon Schools within the context of colonization and examined the history and role of Joseon Schools. The current state of Joseon Schools of various regions within Japan was examined via case studies of Joseon Schools in the end.
