Abstract

The Seoul National University Asia Center and the Committee of Future Earth Korea will jointly organize an international symposium with the theme of “The Sustainability of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia” that invites distinguished scholars of the Network of Future Earth and experts from major Northeast Asia countries. Through this event, we hope to establish an international cooperation network in Northeast Asia that will set up the ‘Future Earth’ research program on the Korean peninsula and draw out valuable joint research agendas and policy recommendations for promoting the sustainability of the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia as a whole. We hope that many of you share our interest in the topics of this academic event on “The Sustainability of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia” and the vision of ‘Future Earth’ pursuing peace and common prosperity in the region.

Review

‘Sustainability’ was the focus of this international symposium co-organized by SNUAC and Future Earth Korea. Recent major diplomatic breakthrough and warmer relationship between the North and South have brought a series of changes in Northeast Asia making it more possible for ‘sustainability’ within Northeast Asia to include the previously isolated North Korean society and seeking a solution for the Korean peninsula as a whole. Researchers from major Future Earth Global HUBs and experts on the Korean peninsula have gathered together for this international symposium. The event began with a keynote speech by Professor Myoung-Kyu Park (Former Director of SNU IPUS, Department of Sociology, SNU) on global support and cooperation for Korean peninsula based on its dramatically changing political atmosphere. The second keynote speech was given by Professor Fumiko Kasuga (Global Hub Director, Future Earth Secretariat, Japan) on Future Earth’s research for sustainability and regional considerations. The following sessions examined progresses made by Future Earth Korea, opportunities for collaboration for sustainability in Northeast Asia, as well as specific challenges were scrutinized such as the sustainability of the Yellow Sea and sustainable diet in Korean peninsula. The wrap-up session at the end was an opportunity for a comprehensive discussion and common agenda building for sustainability in Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia in general.
