Abstract

Fandom is a unique characteristic of East Asian popular culture, but there are only a few comprehensive studies investigating its communal, hierarchical, participatory, and creative nature. The femininity of East Asian fandom, as it is mostly comprised of women, is forcing the formation of new masculinity via East Asian popular culture. This conference will provide an opportunity to discuss fandom and gender identity of each participating countries and facilitate multilayered and in-depth discussions on fandom and gender identity within the context of the region. The first session, East Asian Fandom Culture, will draw historical and up-to-date map of the culture of East Asian fandom from the manga fandom, k-pop fandom, to the up-and-coming enormous fandom culture in China. The second session will deal with shared gender imagination in East Asian popular culture. Discussions about how the shared gender imagination found in transnational East Asian popular culture will bring changes to the power relations between the masculine West and feminine Asia projected in the existing cultural identity composition between East and West.
