The lecture will examine the perplexity of aspects in between religious ideas and institution in the ‘development’ field through case studies on the trans-regional traditions of Buddhism and Islam. Specifically, the lecture will examine the practice displayed through social participation by the development monks in Thailand and public Buddhist institutions, as well as the practice of Islamic law in the Indonesian Aceh region which has suffered conflicts and natural disasters in the context of interventionist reconstruction. The two cases display significant differences in the progress of reestablishing the social order based on the interpretation of religious traditions. The lecture will aim to look into how the core values in religions are reinterpreted by various agents that selectively utilize and dynamically interpret religious scriptures and traditions.
