The issue of refugees in Korean society has long been discussed in terms of human rights and international responsibility. Yet the realities of refugees’ everyday lives, as well as the specific procedures through which the refugee status determination system operates, remain insufficiently understood. This event aims to provide a more concrete understanding of the challenges refugees face in Korean society by examining the current refugee situation in Korea, the procedures for refugee applications and status determination, and the institutional limitations and key issues surrounding the existing refugee recognition system. Drawing on experiences from the field and a human rights perspective, the event will also identify areas in need of reform and explore possible directions for developing a fairer and more effective system of refugee protection.
