Female Universalism: Gender, Melancholia, and Radical Empathy in the Korean Wave – Book Launch Seminar

  • Date: May 27th, Wednesday, 2026, 14:00 – 16:00
  • Location: Room 303, SNUAC (Bldg. 101)

Presenter: Ingyu Oh (Kansai Gaidai University)
Moderator: Wonho Jang (University of Seoul)
Special Remarks & Commendation: Henry Jenkins (University of Southern California)

This seminar introduces a new framework for understanding the transnational K-pop fandom, moving beyond the traditional views of state policy or industrial manipulation. The featured book, “Female Universalism,” argues that women worldwide recognize shared experiences of gendered pain through Korean popular culture. This recognition is not about uniformity, but about validating emotional experiences often dismissed by Western discourse. By examining the transition from individual recognition to collective action—through Radical Empathy, Chosen Families, and Mobilization—the authors demonstrate how shared testimony transforms into a powerful force for civic imagination and social change.
