- Date: October 23rd, Thursday, 2025, 10:00 – 12:00
- Online via Zoom [in Russian]
Presenter: Vyacheslav Shadrin (Acting Deputy Director for International Projects and Programs, Institute of Humanities Research and Problems of Northern Minorities, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and Far East (RAIPON) for Yakutia)
This lecture examines the thawing of permafrost in the Yakutia (Sakha Republic) region and the severe problems it poses for rural communities. The melting of permafrost due to climate change has led to the destruction of housing infrastructure, changes in traditional ways of life, and direct threats to the survival of Indigenous communities.
Dr. Shadrin, a member of the Yukaghir people—one of the northern Indigenous minorities—will present findings based on his field-based qualitative research. As both a scholar and an advocate for Indigenous rights, he will discuss the impacts of climate change on the lives of northern Indigenous peoples and the adaptive strategies developed by local communities.
