Indonesia-Africa and Southeast Asia/ASEAN-Africa Relations within the Broader Afro-Asian Context

Since 2022, the Asia-Africa Center at SNUAC has been regularly hosting the “SNU Africa Seminar” series on a monthly basis. The SNU Africa Seminar series aims to promote a deeper understanding of Africa and foster academic exchange by inviting Africa specialists from diverse academic fields and professional backgrounds.

The 24th SNU Africa Seminar, scheduled for Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, will feature Dr. Christophe Dorigne-Thomson from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (UI). He will deliver a lecture and lead a discussion on the theme “Indonesia-Africa and Southeast Asia/ASEAN-Africa Relations within the Broader Afro-Asian Context.” In this seminar, Dr. Thomson will explore in depth the exchanges and cooperation between Southeast Asia and Africa, with a focus on Indonesia-Africa relations. Special attention will be given to the enduring ties between Indonesia and Africa that trace back to the 1955 Bandung Conference, as well as to Indonesia’s recent diplomatic strategies toward Africa under the new government. Through this seminar, participants are expected to gain fresh insights into the exchanges and collaborations between the civilizations of Asia and Africa.

Dr. Christophe Dorigne-Thomson is a researcher at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (UI), where he primarily focuses on Indonesia’s diplomatic relations with Africa. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from UI. He has published several academic papers on Indonesia’s evolving Africa policy and the promotion of ASEAN-Africa relations, and recently authored Indonesia’s Engagement with Africa, published by Palgrave Macmillan.
