A special lecture by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 3:00 PM in the Youngone Hall at SNUAC. The event was attended by approximately 120 participants, including Malaysian international students in Korea, students from Seoul National University and other domestic universities interested in Southeast Asia, researchers specializing in Southeast Asian studies in Korea, and representatives of Malaysian media.
The lecture, titled “Strategic Partners in a Complex World: Malaysia, Korea, and the Future of Asia,” highlighted Prime Minister Ibrahim’s perspective on the strategic partnership between Malaysia and Korea. Drawing from his youth as an activist resisting state oppression and injustice, Prime Minister Ibrahim emphasized the importance of both nations upholding democratic values and cooperating in shaping the future of Asia.
A long-time critic of the illegitimacy of Myanmar’s civil war since his time as an opposition leader, Prime Minister Ibrahim reiterated that ASEAN must work collectively to address the crisis in Myanmar. With Malaysia set to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, attention is focused on how it might garner regional support and cooperation to resolve the conflict effectively.
