A Commemorative Symposium for SNUAC’s 10th Anniversary: Retrospect and Prospect

In the afternoon of September 26th, SNU Asia Center held a commemorative symposium for its 10th anniversary at Youngone Hall. The symposium took off with an opening speech by Director SooJin Park, continuing with reports of major research activities in the past decade and plans for the future directions by each center and program of SNUAC. Starting with Northeast Asia Center, all five regional research centers gave their presentations, leading on to presentations of 10 thematic research programs/centers.

After the symposium, there was a celebratory dinner at Samick Hall of SNUAC inviting all staff of the center and related institutes, as well as those who had spent time at the center in the past. The ceremony began with Director SooJin Park’s welcome speech, followed by congratulatory speeches by Dong Young Noh, Vice President for Research Affairs, and Bong Joo Lee, Dean of College of Social Sciences. Especially, Professor Lee brought a report that was put together when SNUAC was first established, vividly recalled its history and congratulated its 10th anniversary. After the congratulatory speeches, a slide show was shown for all to follow the traces of SNU’s ten years. In the reporting session by the Vision Committee, Yongho Kim, the committee chair, presented an evaluation of SNUAC’s past achievements and a prospect for its future, leading to Director Park’s proclamation of SNUAC’s visions.

In the award ceremony that followed, Hyun-Chin Lim, the founding director, presented  achievement awards to Bong Joo Lee (Dept. of Social Welfare), Geum-joo Kwak (Dept. of Psychology), Jae-Young Kim (Dept. of Economics), Cheongtag Kim (Dept. of Psychology), and Sang Hoon Ahn (Dept. of Social Welfare). Awards for outstanding staff were given to Suk-ki Kong (SNUAC), Jong-Cheol Kim (SNUAC) and HyunJee Baek (SNUAC), who have worked at the center for extended periods. Their awards were presented by Dean Bong Joo Lee. The outstanding entries for the catch-phrase contest for SNUAC’s 10th anniversary was awarded by Deputy Director Baegeui Hong, while the best entry went to Jeeyoung Jeon (Gachon University) who submitted ‘Connecting the World, Architecting the Future’ that was used for the banner and eco-bags for commemorating the 10th anniversary of SNUAC.

After a photo shoot and a toast, a video of congratulatory messages from domestic/foreign cooperative institutes and many figures who have passed through SNUAC was presented. There were special celebratory performances such as the following: a collaborative performance of traditional instruments of Korea and Asia by SNU’s department of Korean music, an Asian-instrument performance by Silk Road Music Friends supported by the Turkish Cultural Center, and a woodwind quintet by SNU’s department of instrumental music. Finally, the celebratory dinner was concluded with congratulatory addresses by alumni Kyungyon Moon (SNUAC Visiting Scholar), who had been selected as an awardee of dissertation writing fellowship in 2016, and Saerom Ham (Dept. of Political Science and International Relations), who had been part of the 5th cohort internship and now works as research assistant in the US-China Program.
