이 책이 추구하는 시대정신은 탈근대 혹은 다중 근대로서 21세기를 맞이하는 동아시아의 사회학자들이 기존 서구중심적 시각을 극복하되, 그 장점은 버리지 않으면서, 동아시아 특유의 논리와 가치를 발굴하여, 동아시아의 정체성과 새로운 문명전환의 비전을 추구하는 것이다.
이 책의 출판은 아래 네 가지 점에서 기념비적 의의를 가진다.
1. 사상 처음으로 사회학분야에서 (아마도 인문사회과학분야를 통틀어서?) 한국, 중국, 일본의 사회학자들이 동아시아사회학자 네트워크를 조직하여 10년 이상 학술대회를 개최하고 그 성과의 일부를 집대성한 것이다.
2. 이 책의 공동편집자들은 모두 각국의 사회학회 회장을 역임하였고, 국내외에 걸쳐 학문적 역량을 인정받은 사회학자들이다.
3. 이 책에 참여한 집필자들은 각국에서 해당 분야의 최고 전문가로 공인되는 사회학자들이다.
4. 이 책의 마지막 부분인 Sophia Declaration은 최근 심화되는 한중일의 정치적 갈등에 직면하여 그 원인(일본제국주의의 과오)과 대책(동아시아공동체 구상과 건설)을 한중일 3국의 사회학자들이 상호 합의하여 선언한 실천적 결실이다.
이 책은 현재 동아시아 및 전 세계의 핵심적 관심사가 되고 있는 사회현상들, 예컨대, 세계화와 동아시아, 불평등, 다문화주의, 사회운동, 위험사회 등을 동아시아적 관점에서 진단하고, 분석한다. 동아시아공동체, 베이징 컨센서스, 양극화, 다문화사회, 초국적운동과 세계시민사회, 위험의 다차원적 재인식 등의 대안적 개념이 이론적 혹은 경험적 차원에서 검토되고 있다.
동아시아는 어떤 단일의 개념이나 지표로 규정될 수 없다. 그래서 이 책은 상호 경쟁적이면서도 협력하는 수많은 동아시아 사회학들을 추구한다. 이념적으로는 자유주의와 맑스주의가 공존하고 아나키즘도 등장한다. 발전주의국가론과 더불어 세계시민사회론이 제안된다. 인적자본과 사회자본의 확충 뿐 아니라 비판적 시민운동과 자본주의 비판도 등장한다.
나아가 동아시아는 과거, 현재, 미래가 공시적으로 결합하면서 형성되는 과정이다. 따라서 자기충족적 예언으로서의 동아시아는 불안정한 현실주의와 비관적 역사주의를 극복할 수 있는 잠재력을 갖는다. 끝으로 이 책은 동아시아의 사회학자들이 세계의 사회학자들을 향해 던지는 소리 없는 함성이다: “동아시아를 주목하라. 우리는 동아시아에서 세계로 나아간다.”
