In this talk, Professor Sonnenberg will discuss an ongoing research project focused on how to think about Rule of Law Development Programming in societies with pluralistic legal systems. Since 2016, Prof. Sonnenberg has been involved in a large-scale research project to understand the nature of justice in Bhutan, a small landlocked country in the Himalayan mountain range. His findings suggest a new approach for international rule of law development collaborations: one that balances the tension between relativism and universalism. Prof. Sonnenberg intends to present his findings to colleagues at SNU, from a variety of disciplines, as a way of soliciting feedback from a broad range of disciplines.

Asian Futures Seminar Series 네 번째 특강에서는 법학과의 스테판 피터 손넨버그 교수가 <정의와 법치주의>라는 주제로 강의를 하였다. 손넨버그 교수는 ‘아시아적 가치’는 무엇인가로 시작하여 그가 정의의 본질을 이해하기 위해 대규모 프로젝트에 참여한 남아시아의 작은 산악 국가, 북쪽의 히말라야산맥을 경계로 중국 티베트 자치구와 접해 있는 국가 부탄을 예로 들며 재미있는 강의를 이어갔다. 강의 후 많은 참여자들이 질문을 하였으며, Kate 연구자는 “만약에 서로 다른 기증자들, 연구자들, 지역 주민들, 그리고 정책 입안자들이 다른 결론에 도달한다면, 누가 최종 결정을 내릴 것인가?”라는 질문을 하였으며, 아시아연구소 방문학자인 하현정 연구자도 참여하여 질문과 함께 열띤 토론을 하였다.
이번 강연은 2020년 Asian Futures Seminar Series의 마지막 순서로, 동 시리즈의 다음 강연은 2021년에 열릴 예정이다.
