Shamsul AB BA, MA (Malaya), PhD (Monash) in social anthropology; Distinguished Professor and Founding Director, Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA), The National University of Malaysia; has been active in research, teaching and writing, since 1976, on the broad theme of ‘politics, culture & economic development,’ with an empirical focus on Southeast Asia. He was awarded, in 2008, the prestigious Academic Prize of the 19th Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize, Japan (for details cf. http://www.asianmonth.com/prize/english/winner/19_04.html); currently, he is Pro-Tem Chair, Academy of Social Sciences & Humanities, Malaysia; a frequent commentator on current affairs in Malaysia. 발표개요 (국문)
세계의 여러 사회들이 ‘다양성 속의 단합’이라는 가치를 강조해왔다는 점은 각 사회가 종족, 계급, 젠더, 세대, 정치적 성향, 종교적 믿음, 그리고 언어 등에 있어 이질적 요소들을 내포하고 있다는 사실을 반영한다. 이 세미나에서는 말레이시아가 ‘단합’이라는 궁극적 목표를 달성하려고 노력해 가는 과정에서 사회 내의 상반되는 요소들이 어떠한 갈등의 양상을 보여 왔는지를 살펴보고 그 과정에서 이룩한 성과는 과연 무엇인지 진단해 본다. 이 발표에서는 비교연구를 위해 아시아와 오세아니아 그리고 미주지역의 사례들도 인용할 것이다.
