Maps are more than just tools for navigation; they are reflections of how societies perceive and interpret the world around them. The study of historical maps provides valuable insights into the geographical knowledge, cultural exchanges, and political landscapes of past civilizations.
This seminar, 'Historical Maps of Asia,' aims to examine the diverse cartographic traditions of Asia and explore how these maps were created, used, and interpreted in different historical contexts. By analyzing old maps, we seek to understand the ways in which geographical knowledge was constructed, transmitted, and transformed over time.
In particular, this seminar will address key themes such as:
The role of maps in shaping political and cultural identities in Asia.
The evolution of mapping techniques and their historical significance.
The relationship between historical maps and textual sources.
The application of GIS and digital tools in the study of historical cartography.
Through interdisciplinary discussions, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the historical and cultural significance of maps and encourage new perspectives on the use of historical cartography in modern research. |
