This Storymap researched and designed by Mi Hyun Seong is the first result of a research project on the digitial divide and rural education in the Philippines. It was part of a bigger research project on rural inequality led by Dr. Edo Andriesse and partially funded by the grant from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF-2019S1A5A2A0) to investigate “Glocal rural inequality labs in Southeast Asia: How to reduce socioeconomic and socio-political marginalisation? This project is a collaboration of rural development experts based in the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Mi Hyun Seong’s research will be followed up by on-site interviews and observations in Iloilo Province, conducted by the Iloilo Chapter of the Philippine Red Cross.<\/p>\n

Mi Hyun Seong currently studies at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and is enrolled in the research master’s programme of the faculty of Spatial Sciences. Her research interests focus on (islands) regional development and the societal implications of adopting advanced technologies, which includes digitization, digital automation, labour market transition, and labour mobility. She gained further insight into these interests while working with international research teams during the course of study; one was this study on the digital divide in the Philippines and the other explored co-working spaces in both European cities and Seoul. She utilized mixed-methods approaches including statistical analysis, spatial analysis with GIS, as well as qualitative analysis.<\/p>\n
Edo Andriesse is an associate professor at the department of geography, Seoul National University. He teaches a wide range of human geography courses.
