Collectively, this international 2017 cohort represents five countries, multiple academic disciplines, and 10 different universities.

Since the fellowship program’s inception in 2011, Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellowships: InterAsian Contexts and Connections have been awarded to over 65 scholars whose projects reconceptualize research on Asia as an interlinked historical and geographic formation stretching from West Asia (including Turkey) through Eurasia, Central Asia, and South Asia to Southeast Asia and East Asia. Expanded as of 2016, the program now includes a focus on projects that explore linkages beyond this expanse, particularly looking at Afro-Asian connections, as well as the work of international scholars. Proposals supported by the fellowships examine processes that connect places and peoples (such as migration, media, and resource flows) as well as those that reconfigure local and translocal contexts (such as shifting borders, urbanization, and social movements).

We will begin accepting applications for the 2018 competition in June 2017. Please check the InterAsia site for additional details.

The SSRC Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellowship is funded through the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

2017 Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellows:

Ambika Aiyadurai
Assistant Professor, Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar
‘Nature’ in InterAsia: Biodiversity Conservation in India, China, and Bhutan

Ross Anthony
Acting Director, Centre for Chinese Studies, Stellenbosch University
Ecology, Infrastructure and Ethics along China’s ‘One Belt One Road’: The Case of Kenya

Bryce Beemer
Scholar Expert, Smithsonian Museum – Journeys
Creole Kingdoms: Slave Gathering Warfare and Cultural Exchange in Burma, Thailand, and Manipur, 18th–19th C.

Britt Crow-Miller
Assistant Professor, School for the Future of Innovation in Society, Arizona State University
The Emerging Geography of Chinese Water Infrastructure: InterAsian and Transregional Connections in the Food-Energy-Water Nexus

Rohit De
Assistant Professor, History, Yale University
Rights from the Left: Decolonization, Diasporas, and the Global History of Rebellious Lawyering

Jatin Dua
Assistant Professor, Anthropology, University of Michigan
Navigating the Bab-el-Mandeb: Risk and Opportunity in the Red Sea

Jennifer Ferng
Lecturer, Architecture, University of Sydney
Offshore Migrations: Shelter and Humanitarian Ethics among Australasian Detention Centers

William Hedberg
Assistant Professor, School of International Letters and Cultures, Arizona State University
Embracing the Margins: Translation, Nation, and Chinese Fiction in Early Modern Japan

Jeremy Kingsley
Senior Lecturer, Law, Swinburne University of Technology
Inter-Asian Legalities

Kah-Wee Lee
Assistant Professor, Architecture and Urban Planning, National University of Singapore
Casino Urbanisms: Networks of Profit and the Architectural Fix

Nidhi Mahajan
Mellon Sawyer Seminar Postdoctoral Fellow, Center for the Humanities, Tufts University
Moorings: Indian Ocean Trade and the State in East Africa

Christina Moon
Assistant Professor, School of Art and Design History and Theory, The New School
Ephemera: Fast Fashion Families in the US and Asia

James Pickett
Assistant Professor, History, University of Pittsburgh
Polymaths of Islam: Scholars, Religious Networks, and Semicolonialism in Eurasia

Nisha Poyyaprath Rayaroth
Independent Scholar
Trapezing across Continents: Transnational Lives and the Indian Circus

SSRC Global Summer Semester Residency at the University of Göttingen

In collaboration with the Global and Transregional Studies Platform at the University of Göttingen in Germany, the SSRC’s InterAsia Program also selected a cohort of five researchers as SSRC Global Summer Semester Residency fellows.
