Rather than merely preserving traditional ways of life, Arctic peoples have actively adapted to changing circumstances by combining reindeer pastoralism with modern modes of transportation, local community structures with the market economy, and Indigenous knowledge with new technologies.

Focusing on the intersection of tradition and modernity, mobility and governance—symbolized by the “reindeer” and the “helicopter”—this event will examine the survival strategies developed by the peoples of the Russian Arctic. In doing so, it seeks to provide an opportunity to understand the Russian Arctic not simply as a space of resource development and geopolitical competition, but as a lived environment in which people have continually reconfigured their ways of life and the futures of their communities in response to changing political and social systems.
