{"id":19376,"date":"2026-02-09T01:50:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T01:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snuac.snu.ac.kr\/eng\/?p=19376"},"modified":"2026-02-09T01:50:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T01:50:46","slug":"multicultural-korean-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snuac.snu.ac.kr\/eng\/index.php\/2026\/02\/09\/multicultural-korean-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Multicultural Korean Society as Seen from the Position of Professional Migrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19378\" src=\"https:\/\/snuac.snu.ac.kr\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/260226_poster-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1191\" height=\"842\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Date:<\/strong> February 26th, Friday, 2026, 14:00 &#8211; 15:30<\/li>\n<li><b>Online via Zoom<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"127\" data-end=\"408\">Speaker: Srijan Kumar (Assistant Professor, Hindi Major, Global Cultural Business and Global Liberal Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"62\" data-end=\"560\">In this colloquium, &#8220;Multicultural Korean Society as Seen from the Position of Professional Migrants&#8221;, the presenter will revisit multicultural sensitivity and policy change in Korean society not from the perspective of a long-settled migrant who has become accustomed to local life, but from the standpoint of a migrant who, despite having reached the social status of a professional, must continuously negotiate and adjust across institutional, relational, linguistic, and cultural boundaries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"562\" data-end=\"1016\">Tracing the period from entering Korean society as an international student in 2008 to the present in 2025, the presentation will offer a multidimensional account of how multicultural education has shifted\u2014from an early phase in which it was first institutionalized and rooted in practice, to a stage in which broader structural transformation across society is being demanded\u2014drawing on the presenter\u2019s lived experience and work in educational settings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1695\">The presentation will be structured by intersecting three levels: personal experience (micro), institutions and discourse (meso), and future directions (macro). Beginning with scenes encountered in classrooms and on campuses\u2014such as issues of migrant language, qualifications, family, labor, and belonging\u2014it will examine how these experiences have been connected to policy frameworks, institutional structures, and media discourse. Furthermore, at a moment when Korean society is effectively moving from being a \u201cmulticultural society\u201d to debating its transformation into a \u201cmulticultural nation,\u201d the presentation will raise questions about the next stage of this transition.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"2105\">In particular, the presentation will evaluate social change in Korea through the lenses of diversity, equity, and inclusion, while reviewing achievements accumulated over the past 18 years\u2014including changes in public awareness, expansion of institutional frameworks, and the development of educational and support systems.
